Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism, is worshipped and revered by millions of devotees all over the world. Among the many holy sites associated with Lord Shiva, the Jyotirlingas hold a special place in the hearts of his followers. The Jyotirlingas are twelve sacred sites in India where Lord Shiva is said to have manifested himself as a fiery column of light or "jyoti". These sites are considered to be some of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Shiva devotees.
Each of the 12 Jyotirlingas has a unique story and significance associated with it. The twelve sites are:
Somnath Jyotirlinga - Located in Gujarat, this Jyotirlinga is believed to have been built by the moon god, Soma, after he was cured of a curse by Lord Shiva.
Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga - Located in Andhra Pradesh, this Jyotirlinga is believed to be the site where Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati reunited after a long separation.
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga - Located in Madhya Pradesh, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of a king who was cursed by a sage to become a demon, and was later cured by Lord Shiva.
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga - Located in Madhya Pradesh, this Jyotirlinga is situated on an island in the Narmada River and is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva defeated the demon Vindhya.
Kedarnath Jyotirlinga - Located in Uttarakhand, this Jyotirlinga is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a bull to the Pandavas during the Mahabharata era.
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga - Located in Maharashtra, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of a demon named Bhima who was slain by Lord Shiva.
Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga - Located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, this Jyotirlinga is considered to be one of the most sacred sites for Lord Shiva devotees.
Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga - Located in Maharashtra, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of the god Ganesha and is also believed to be the source of the Godavari River.
Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga - Located in Jharkhand, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of the demon Ravana who sought to bring Lord Shiva's abode to Lanka.
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga - Located in Gujarat, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of a demon named Daruka who was slain by Lord Shiva.
Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga - Located in Tamil Nadu, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of the god Rama, who is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here before crossing over to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita.
Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga - Located in Maharashtra, this Jyotirlinga is associated with the legend of a woman named Kusuma who worshipped Lord Shiva and was blessed with a son.
